A Vibrant Arts Community

Chatham County's reputation as a creative community is due in large part to the presence of numerous artists in the region, including potters, painters, blacksmiths, glassblowers, fiber artists, sculptors, musicians, photographers, and writers. The arts community continues to grow through the efforts of individuals, as well as ChathamArts, the Chatham County Arts Council. ChathamArts believes that art is a necessary component of a high quality of life. To encourage Chatham County's creative community, the Arts Council started a gallery in downtown Pittsboro and began the Chatham Studio Tour. Today, the Chatham Artists Guild puts on the annual tour to raise awareness and appreciation for the local visual arts scene. In 2004, Siler City became the home of the NC Arts Incubator, which provides low-rent gallery and studio space to local artists. The Incubator developed out of conversations between the local business community and the Central Carolina Community College Business Assistance Center about how to redevelop Siler City's central business district and foster small businesses. Today, the Incubator owns four buildings downtown, where it provides working and gallery space for 13 artists, a locally-owned cafe, and sponsors events, including the monthly 3rd Friday Art Walk.

A Strong Musical Heritage

Chatham County also has a strong tradition of bluegrass music, story-telling, and theater. The Grassroots Festival at Shakori Hills Farmstead takes place twice a year and binds together the many strands of Chatham County's creative community. The four-day festival brings together local and nationally known bluegrass musicians in a uniquely Chatham location; festival participants also have access to local crafts and food and a sustainability fair. With its focus on the arts, education, and conservation, the Shakori Hills Festival has gained a national reputation that draws more people each year from North Carolina and beyond.

Live music can also be found at a number of venues across Chatham County during the summer.  Bynum Front Porch, 3rd Fridays in Siler City, and several restaurants host local musicians playing an eclectic mixture of bluegrass, jazz, and other popular music.
